Chapter 25
Mike and Karl stepped into the room and were met with a sight they would never forget.
Valerie looked battered lying at the end of the bed like a rag doll. She was bleeding from her head, her face was twisted in pain even though one could tell that her consciousness was slipping, and her complexion was turning blue again.
This was obviously a sign of the poison that the doctor had brought under control spreading again.
“Doctor…doctor get the doctor in here.” Mike shouted anxiously, unconsciously injecting alpha coercion into his voice.
The suffocation of the alpha power almost made the doctors who were running towards the room after hearing his voice all the way from the office fall to the ground.
Innocent, who was in the room and completely ignored by the two men who were fussing over Valerie, wasn’t so lucky.
She was the closest to Mike and because he hadn’t restricted his power, she was crashed under the coercion to the point of kneeling.
Yet, she didn’t dare to utter a sound. She had been carried away by her anger towards Valerie and went overboard when she beat her up earlier.
Now, her mind was racing trying to find the best explanation for the current situation. She had only wanted to teach Valerie a lesson and vent her anger.
She hadn’t expected to hurt her so badly in the process.
Mike’s POV
Valerie resembled a piece of pork that had been run over by a truck. She was beaten to the point that her breath was faint.
As soon as I walked into the room, Jerry, my wolf howled in my head as if he was mourning.
“Our mate is going to die. I can feel it. What kind of alpha are you when you can’t even protect the most precious thing the moon goddess has given you?” I could tell that Jerry was pissed.
In fact, he had been angry at me ever since we discovered that Valerie was our mate.
I didn’t want such a weak and broken woman as my mate, but Jerry had no problem with it, saying that the moon goddess never made mistakes.
The day I ordered Valerie to go to the dungeon to receive ten lashes after talking back to the auntie in the kitchen, Jerry had been so angry he refused to talk to me for two days.
In fact, he would only appear and speak to me when Valerie was involved. But I always ignore his suggestions of accepting Valerie and claiming her.
Today, however, was different. Seeing Valerie looking like that made my hurt twist in pain. But I still didn’t want to be laughed at and mocked by others if they found out that my mate was the pack slave.
So, I shoved that pain down and tried to act calm. My anxiety, however, couldn’t be calmed. I didn’t want Valerie as my mate, but that didn’t mean I wanted her dead at the moment.
It was fine after I had taken her virginity and improved my strength through our mate bond. But dying just like that was a complete waste.
I anxiously called for the doctor and as the alpha, everyone had to answer to my call immediately.
So, within a minute, the narrow room Valerie was placed in was filled with people stepping over each other to attend to her.
The doctor was about to lift her clothes and examine her when an incredibly uncomfortable feeling hit me and without knowing why, I moved like lightning and grabbed his hand.
“What are you doing?” I asked aggressively.
“Her situation is bad and she seemed to have other injuries on her body apart from those on her head. I need to examine her to understand her situation.” The doctor explained.
“Do you need to take off her clothes to do that?” I asked, this time the irritation in my voice couldn’t be masked with indifference like I wanted.
The doctor looked at me with a blank look and I could tell that he was surprised by my behavior but at that moment, I didn’t care.
I was not letting another man look at my mate’s naked body even if it was a mate I didn’t want.
“Alpha Mike, I need to be able to see her condition in order to know what tests to conduct and what treatment to provide.” The doctor explained.
“Get a female doctor to do that. Everyone else, leave the room.” I ordered without thinking.
However, wolves were trained to never question orders given by the alpha. So, everyone walked out slowly.
It was at this moment that I noticed Innocent behaving like a thief sneaking out of the room with the rest of the crowd.
I didn’t need to be a genius to understand what had happened to Valerie. But this confused me because Innocent had always been so sweet and graceful.
How could she have done something so barbaric? Something must have happened. I decided to ask her later.
I turned to ask the female doctor who had remained behind to examine Valerie quickly when I found Karl standing near the bed with his eyes fixed entirely on Valerie.
He seemed so focused that he didn’t know what was happening around him.
What did he think he was doing? I already asked everyone else to leave. Did he intend to stay through the exam?
That was my mate. Even though we had made a bet, things had changed after finding out that Valerie was my mate.
“Karl, are you not leaving?” I couldn’t hold myself back and asked.
The only answer I received was the quiet in the room. There wasn’t even a breeze to answer me.
“Karl, I am talking to you. Are you going to stay through the exam?” I asked, this time my voice was a little louder.
Karl turned around to look at me and the violence I saw in those eyes wasn’t something I had expected.
It was the kind of twisted violence that promised spilling blood.
I thought I was hallucinating and blinked my eyes a few times. When I looked at him again, he had his usual serene and dignified expression. Only laced with concern for Valerie.
’I was indeed hallucinating.’ I thought to myself.
