Chapter 361
(Author’s POV)
“Ms. Hector~ His majesty… has he~… has he regained any stability? What’s going on? Tell me truthfully,” Chris inquired, his voice low, his eyes brimming with redness from lack of sleep. He has been standing on one leg outside Jacob’s bedroom since last night without having even a sip of water. His face was dull and weary, though he stubbornly remained rooted.
As an ordinary human being, he wasn’t allowed to enter the room as the clan’s healers had converted Jacob’s room into a makeshift healing chamber. The energy was so high, so intense in there that a normal being wouldn’t be able to handle it and would pass out. There were chances that he might end up coughing up blood. So, he was as well as other humans and some of the Vampires with weak constitutions were forbidden to go inside.
Iris Hector, the head of the healers, a vampire herself, took off her face covering and said, her tone calm, yet there was a hint of panic which Chris could hear, “His majesty’s pulse has weakened, fainter than when you brought him. The clan healers, including myself, are doing our absolute best to pull him through, but as of now, Secretary Shadow~ *sigh* things are not looking in our favour p>
Chris was on the verge of tearing up, his voice cracked as he asked, “Is there no hope for him, Ms. Hector? Please~ Please save his~ his majesty. I beg you~ Please save him.” He knelt in front of her, clasped his hands together, interlocking his fingers in a desperate, iron grip, and beseeched her to save Jacob’s life.
Seeing a proud, dignified secretary like Chris Shadow begging her on his knees, Iris couldn’t help but say, though she initially stammered, “There is a way~… but~ She paused and exhaled a heavy breath.
“What is it? Tell me,” Chris’s tear stricken eyes were filled with instantaneous hope. ’There is a way’, these words were enough for him.
She scanned the hallway and the closed door behind her. At last, her eyes settled on him again as she said, “Secretary Shadow, take me to his majesty’s study p>
Chris’s radar was on point. He understood her intentions clearly. Without further ado, he showed her the way to Jacob’s study.
Although all the rooms in the mansion were guarded by soundproofing spells, his study cum office had five layers of protection. After all, that place was as close to a sanctuary for confidential matters for Jacob. Leaking out anything would be next to impossible. Not even a spec of dust could enter.
Chris carefully unlatched the door for her as she walked inside, her steps authoritative, brisk yet graceful. He too followed, then sealed the door shut behind him. Now that there was no chance of any intruder or interruption, he asked, speaking with unmistakable resoluteness, “Ms. Hector~ please disclose, what is it that can save his majesty’s life p>
His voice was dripping with sincerity, his eyes brimming with confidence. Iris Hector was sure that even if she asked him to declare war against the entire world, he wouldn’t hesitate to go through with those words. He has been, after all, Jacob’s most loyal and faithful subject for the past thirty years or so.
For Chris, Jacob Larson was the one who took him under his wing when he was at his lowest of the low. Even his last name, ’Shadow’, was given to him by the then ’Prince of Vampire Clan, Blood Fangs.
Despite being an ordinary mortal, the commonest of the most commoners, inside and out, his loyalty and his devotion never wavered.
With a tight expression, Iris started, her voice hushed despite the closed room. She wasn’t going to take any chances. After all, what she was going say was something no one was allowed to talk about. It was something from the forbidden ancient text, which is now banned from being mentioned to anyone, “I don’t know whether this is true or not, but~ She took a deliberate pause, moistening her chapped lips. “There is an ancient manuscript about healing powers and potions. In the book, there was a particular Chapter about eternal immortality p>
“Was? Eternal immorality?” Chris repeated those words, trying to figure out what she was getting at.
“Yes~ was~ because that particular text was prohibited from use and removed completely from the manuscript ages ago. As the senior healer of the Vampire Clan, I was once sent to the land of half-immortals. There, I somehow came across it in the forbidden section of their library,” Iris conveyed truthfully. Though she omitted the fact that she didn’t ’come across’ per se, but went to look for it on her own accord. But of course, that part, she wouldn’t breathe a word about it. Then she continued, “In it, there is a mention of a certain type of blood~ known as gold blood p>
“A blood made of gold? Or a golden colored blood?” he questioned, puzzlement etched on his face. He had seen blood countless times, after all, he was working for a bloodsucker’s household, but he had never seen golden colored blood. He bled red, and so did Jacob, though the former’s was crimson, while the latter’s blood was more of a burgundy hue. Nor did the were animals bled other than red. So, this was something he couldn’t grasp in his mind.
“Neither of the two. It means the blood is full of vitality. That’s why they gave this name,” she explained. Chris nodded, finally understanding.
“It said that if anyone consumes even a tiny drop of that blood, their vitality would recover within seconds~ Iris was about to reveal the tricky part, but Chris cut her off.
“Where can I find this gold blood, Ms. Hector? I will personally go and bring it. You just tell me the location,” Chris patted his heart and was ready to go.
“The location~ Her voice tightened like a vice; it came out strained. “No one knows about it p>
“Huhh?” Chris’s face was full of panic. “What do you mean p>
“I said exactly what I mean. Like I said in the beginning, the authenticity of that text isn’t known or proved. But~ Iris stopped once again.
“So, there is a but,” Chris’s eyes lit up again. ’I knew god can’t be that cruel p>
Iris’s eyes fluttered nervously, she said, her voice fumbling, “No~ I don’t know anything about it p>
“You do know about it,” Chris was sure. He could read her mind.
“No~… I don’t,” though she tried to keep her demeanour collected and sound confident, her body trembling like a leaf betrayed it.
“Ms. Hector, I swear I will take this secret to my grave. And if anyone finds out, I will take the entire blame. I won’t breathe a word about you. If you don’t believe me, I can make a blood pact with you,” Chris promised. His entire focus was on saving his master. Other than that, nothing else mattered to him.
He scanned the room, and his eyes landed on a pen neatly sitting on the red sandalwood table. He marched, his steps deliberate. Taking the pen in his left hand, he pierced and slashed his right palm diagonally as crimson liquid instantly oozed out of it. Within seconds, the clean marbled floor was stained with his blood that was dripping on it drop by drop.
With pale face and shivering lips, he uttered, his voice remained steady as he extended his blood soaked hand, “I, Chris Shadow, am willing to make a blood pact with Iris Hector from the Blood Fangs Clan. If I betray her ever, may my heartbeats stop that minute and my body turn rotten p>
Iris was stunned by his determined words. She approached him, took his hand, and completed the oath, “I, Iris Hector, Healer of the Vampire Clan, accept your pact.” She then licked his blood off like a thirsty animal.
Chris clenched his other hand, forcing himself not to show even a hint of reaction, but Iris noticed his colorless face and snapped out of it. She took two steps back, wiped the blood with her thumb and spoke, “A few years ago, an experiment was conducted p>
His brows knitted at her words, but he didn’t interrupt this time, “An experiment to make the gold blood p>
“Can it be made?” Chris’s eyes widened at the revelation. “How so p>
Iris didn’t reply, she continued, “In the text, it was written that a person, born to a human female, with human semen but~ has sorcerer like powers, keen senses, and special ability only given to half humans, or demi gods or demons can possess gold blood. They are a walking example of that type of blood. This particular experiment was done to make one like that p>
“You are saying, the person has to be born by ordinary humans, with no such powers, but has powers of their own?” Chris summed it up.
“Bingo. It is exactly that. This kind of thing can only be performed with dark magic, so that’s why this was banned,” Iris told him.
“So, you are saying, there is a human out there who possesses these qualities?” Chris muttered, his voice filled with disbelief.
