Chapter 366
(Author’s POV)
“Why did you suddenly rush out? Did you, by chance, encounter any familiar face?” Brave questioned, half his mind was on the potent smell reeking off of him.
“Myra, Myra Miracle,” Nora said, her voice shuddering.
Brave’s eyes widened in disbelief, his mouth hung open, “WHAT?” he exclaimed. “Are you sure?” He heard this name after a very long time. His eyes flickering unconsciously.
“I am~ I can’t mistake her scent from anyone else’s. She is here. SHE IS HERE,” Nora repeated, her voice cracking at the end, desperation dripping from it.
Alaric donned a tight expression. Of course, he, too, had recognized Myra’s fresh scent and her presence, though it was only a subtle whiff. The overwhelming chemical mingled with a variety of human bodily odors had dimmed it to a great degree.
Adjusting his voice while clearing his throat, he spoke, “Maybe you have gotten it wrong, Ora. How can that hum~… I mean, she be here? After all, this place comes under the Vampire Clan’s jurisdiction. And~… I didn’t~ he paused for a fraction of a second, but said anyways, “I didn’t catch that humans~… essence. Did you, Rave?” he then turned to Brave, catching him off guard.
“I~ he pulled at his shirt in discomfort and said, “My nose is congested with~ So~ He left it at that. He then glanced at his baby sister. Her eyes bloodshot, looking all around the place for a trace of someone she has been etching to unite with. There was anguish residing in her eyes, pure and raw agony.
He recalled the incident from over a year ago. The painfully dreary night that changed everything flashed across his mind. It was a bittersweet memory for him as it brought his wolf, his Raw back to him. But it came with the price of his sister, Nora, losing her best friend and their cherished bond forever.
Brave didn’t have a recollection of most of what actually happened that night, only a few fragments where he approached Myra and his sister in a bruised, battered state. The rest, he knew, was what others apprised him. They sugarcoated the incident, trying to say that it wasn’t his fault, but he knew better. He wasn’t a fool.
For an ordinary person who isn’t aware of the world beyond the human race, encountering an ensanguined person from head to toe and then him transforming into a gigantic werewolf right in front of your eyes, in the dead of the night. Scary, right? Anyone in Myra’s position would be scared shitless. Even imagining it would make Brave feel he did something really wrong.
And the betrayal that came after of keeping their shapeshifting identities hidden made it even worse. His conscience had stricken and he felt gravely ashamed of the fact that he was the reason for their fallout. Myra even ran away with her family and vanished completely. A clear message that stated she didn’t want to have anything to do with them.
When he first heard about this, a sudden pang of heartache surged into his chest. He didn’t know the reason, the whys and the whats, but the raw emotion was something he had only felt when he lost his~ his mate, his Hannah, and almost his life with her.
As Nora’s condition deteriorated a lot after Myra’s disappearance, all the Everests made a mental note not mention or even breathe a word regarding Myra or Damona in front of Nora. With time gradually passing by, things got back on its trail, though they never stopped looking for the Miracles.
The sudden mention of that name, now, made his heart thump wildly in his chest. It was an instinctive reaction that neither he nor Raw could answer about.
Nora’s jaw was locked, trembling as she tried to hold back her tears. Her body shivering under her thin layers of clothes. Alaric considered himself culpable for lying to his sister, but some pills, no matter how bitter they are, need to be given.
So, he was ready to be the bad guy, for the sake of his sister, for Myra, for everyone involved, especially for his wolf.
“How can you be so sure she isn’t here? Isn’t this place full of humans? There might be a chance, brother Al, brother Rave. We should search for her,” Nora’s voice was filled with part hope and part hopelessness.
Seeing her like that, remorse gnawed at his heart. Before Brave could say anything, he replied, taking matters into his own hands, “I will do it. For you~ I will look into it.” He promised, though his voice came out taut.
“Now~ You both~… need to go,” he added.
“Where to?” Brave inquired.
“I don’t think either of you could or should go like that to visit a patient. Won’t be a good idea,” Alaric said in a matter of factly tone. “You both need to go back to the hotel, wash up thoroughly and change. The smell is overwhelming p>
“And you? Aren’t you coming with us?” Nora asked, her voice, after Alaric’s promise, came out better than before.
He took the fruit basket from Brave’s hands and said, “I will visit Fabian Stephens on your behalf and hand over your precious gifts to him~… You two~ get off now.” He commanded, though his voice remained light hearted, gesturing for them to go.
Taking his advice, both Nora and Brave departed. He saw them off with a smile, but as soon as the car receded from his sight, his sapphires turned cold, resembling ice.
’Will you really go through with your promise, Al?’ Alex probed, though he was already aware of the answer.
’What do you think?’ Instead of answering, he retorted with a question of his own.
’You shouldn’t have reneged on what you aren’t going to fulfil,’ his wolf expressed sharply.
’Who said I will go back on that. Did I?’ Alaric countered.
’What are you thinking, Al?’ Alex was skeptical.
’You~ Wolfie, have a long way to go,’ he kept it at that and walked inside the hospital, unbothered.
